Production Make-up

In this lesson, we’ll explore how to present your best self on camera, focusing on the essential aspects of makeup, skincare, and grooming. You’ll learn how to prepare your face to look its best in recordings, with practical tips and advice on achieving a professional appearance.

As I mentioned earlier, both men and women should watch this video. We’ll be addressing the issue of how the camera captures your face, which often doesn’t match what you see in the mirror.

The camera sees lights, shadows, forms, and flaws. Many people have had negative experiences with photos, not liking the way they look because the camera can emphasize what we don’t want to show.

I don’t want you to dislike your videos, as this might lead you to procrastinate and avoid recording. To ensure you have a positive experience, especially if this is your first time or if you’ve had unsatisfactory experiences, it’s crucial to look your best. Your face is key.

Taking Care of Your Face

Think about getting ready for a wedding, whether it’s yours or someone else’s. Would you show up without makeup as a woman, or with hastily applied makeup as if you were just going to the grocery store? Would you arrive with oily skin, dry lips, or an unshaved, unkempt beard or moustache?

Here’s what you need to do

  • Clean and Moisturized Skin: The camera can pick up on dull or unkempt skin. Before recording, wash your face and apply moisturizer.
  • Matte Look: Avoid oily skin that reflects light. Notice how news anchors are prepped with makeup, using large brushes to apply powder? Powder works for both men and women. It’s especially useful during summer when studios might get hot. Choose a powder that matches your skin tone, and use it lightly.
  • Rested Look: Life can be busy, and you may not always record in the morning when you’re feeling fresh. In those cases, you might need to fake it. Let me show you two pictures from my recording session, one before “faking it” and one after. [Demonstration] As you can see, I have dark circles under my eyes from fatigue or age. Concealer can help with this.

Makeup Tips for Ladies

For a more refreshed look, consider the following:

  • Moisturize your face before applying makeup.
  • Use a base makeup to even out your skin tone.
  • Apply concealer to mask blemishes and dark under-eye circles.
  • Use a corrector to sculpt your face, such as defining your jawline and emphasizing cheekbones.
  • Add blush to give a rosy tone to the tops of your cheekbones.
  • Experiment with eye shadows to brighten your look. Avoid dark lines under your eyes, as this can cast shadows on areas you’re trying to conceal.
  • Moisturize your lips, even if you don’t want to colour them.

Hair Styling Finally, style your hair. Sometimes your everyday style isn’t the best for the camera. Think about how you’d style your hair for a special occasion.

That’s it for this segment. In the next video, we’ll discuss camera settings.
