Research of Materials Using ChatGPT
In this video we will practically find the materials for the book you are writing. We will search through ChatGPT, as now it supports the internet search and does quite a good job in this area.
You might have thought that the research is supposed to be done first and the book structure will derive from it. Yes, it would be like that if we would not work with ChatGPT. But since we are using the AI to make the first draft is like we are making a research plan. And we have done a perfect research plan – 1st Draft.
Now based on the book content we will look for supporting materials and ask ChatGPT to suggest the Chapters to integrate them into. We might just follow the suggestion of the chapter or shaffle the materials in our own unique way. This will be done in the process of integration.
v The ChatGPT Prompt for the Research
We will prompt ChatGPT to do research in the same Chat we got our book chapters and their content. This is important. Because we want ChatGPT to know the content we want to research and we need it to refer to the chapters, so ChatGPT should have the book in its memory.
The prompt for ChatGPT will include the list of materials we want to have and a request for Chapter integration suggestion. You may notice that I only have 7 types of materials that I believe that ChatGPT can help me with. The below prompt is for my book. You have to customize it for your book before use. Don’t just copy paste everything.
Please help me with the following things one by one.
I need to have a collection of the following materials for the book with the sources:
1. Facts about Executive Function issues (negative)
2. Facts about Executive Function issues (positive)
3. Stories the living famous people (celebrities, scientists, politicians, authors, inventors… and more) shared about experiences related to Executive Function challenges.
4. Stories of dead famous people (celebrities, scientists, politicians, authors, inventors.. and more) shared about experiences related to Executive Function challenges.
5. Studies or Research papers related to executive function issues
6. Statistics related to executive function-related issues.
7. Quotes and proverbs related to EF.
I will read these materials (your description of the material and the sources provided) and decide how to integrate into the book later. However, I would like you to provide me with book integration suggestions for each of the material at the summary of your response in a table format. The table should contain the short name of the material, chapters you suggest to integrate this material to, and the recommendation on how to integrate or why do you suggest this integration into a specific chapter (short and simple)
Let’s take it one by one and start with 1.
What did I list? This list doesn’t look the same as one I have shown you in the previous lesson. True. I will explain to you why I have broken down the materials this way, so that you know whether you need to request from ChatGPT additional information or not.
§ Facts
Separately positive and negative so that it will be easier to sort them later. This prompt will not give me research, study, statistics although I request facts. I will get more of the general information in the magazine articles.
This information ChatGPT most probably already included into the book, but having it we can either extend the interesting facts or reference a famous magazine (periodical issue).
§ Stories of Celebrities
We will request information separately on those who are currently appearing in the media often and those who are historical figures. These prompts will give us references to the Celebrities stories published in magazines. If we need, we can extend the prompt by requesting references to actual interviews, so that we know
- when and why Celebrities told these stories, or
- who told these stories about them
By Celebrities I mean the list of famous people extended beyond singers and actors. Sometimes when ChatGPT focuses only on narrow list you need to ask it to provide additionally people from other concrete industries, like:
- sports,
- academia and science,
- governments,
- activists,
- philanthropists
- and so on.
Stories about Celebrities that live now and those who are already historical figures also come often from different sources.
- Current celebrities often appear in magazines, interviews, shows, podcasts.
- Historical figures can be described in encyclopedia, biographies, also magazines that find their stories relevant to the audience. Hence separated prompts.
§ Studies and Research papers
Studies and Research go in one prompt, because for the sorting purposes later I don’t need to distinguish between the studies and research. The source of this information usually is academic cycles. The results will be found in published academic works, articles that recite academic works and books that are available online.
§ Statistics
Statistics are listed separately from studies because the source is different from research and studies. The source of those statistics are usually government or non-government organizations. Some organizations can be like UNICEF, or maybe organizations that primarily focus on statistical data and sell it. So, I want to be able to look from different perspectives on each topic and that is why I divide sources. Usually, you will be referred to the official websites of those organizations, or articles that cite the statistical data.
§ Quotes and Proverbs
Quotes and proverbs appear in the same ChatGPT prompt because of the way they are used in the book: usually to start a discussion. That is why I don’t break them into separate prompts.
Also, those proverbs are not the Book of Proverbs. I refer to the folklore here. But if you want to have quotations from the Bible it has to be a separate additional prompt.
The source of proverbs (folk) is not very important for us, as usually they are shared from generation to generation verbally. But when we talk about Quotations of different people we have to be careful. Because there is a lot of fake quotations of Fraud, Jung, Martin Luther King, Mandela or Elisabeth Roosevelt. If you dig into the source of the quote, you will find that the quotation attributed to a specific person is a myth in so many cases. My experience is that 50% of quotes are rubbish and I often find this rubbish in the books.
Now let me quickly show how my Chat looks and where did I have arguments with ChatGPT.
: Demonstration of the screen
- The conversation
- The references
- Recommendation of materials use in the Chapters
Most probably we should move to the next section: the organization of the materials. See you there.
v Organization of the Materials – Word
Now as we have all research materials in the ChatGPT, just like with any other stage before we will transfer those search materials into a Word document. Assign Headings and Subheadings and then create a visual representation of materials in the new tool called Miro.
Let me start by showing you the way my materials are organized.
: Demonstration of the screen
- Word document organization
- The document does not include prompts this time because I know the structure I am working on
- The document include headings of each response so that it is easier to navigate
- All subheadings are leveled properly so that I can work easily with them
