The SpeedReading

In this video, I will share a technique to enhance your reading speed and my methods for developing this skill.

Why is speed reading important?

Faster reading is essential to efficiently navigate through large volumes of text. Well-structured text facilitates this process. As we engage with text in platforms like ChatGPT, Bing, websites, research papers, and books to create educational products, it’s crucial to avoid spending excessive time on reading.

Step #1: Divide the Reading Process into Three Phases

To expedite text processing, master reading in three phases:

  1. Create mental space for the information you analyze, akin to organizing files on a computer.
  2. Absorb key information from each analyzed fragment.
  3. Only read if it’s worthwhile after completing the analysis.

Now, let’s delve into each phase:

Step #2: Pay Attention to Headings

To effectively create mental files, assign names or titles to them. This ensures clarity about the contents of each file, whether the information is temporary or permanent. Practice consciously categorizing information while learning, searching, or reviewing.

Practical tip: Recall headings and the overall structure of the text. Books usually have a contents table, while articles provide a content preview in the introduction. Envision the text structure in your mind, analyzing information in each section. Never overlook the Table of Contents.

Example: Consider “Retire Young – Retire Rich” by Robert Kiyosaki.

Step #3: Catch Key Words and Messages

Avoid reading every word when researching, echoing the wisdom of Solomon: “The making of many books is endless, and much devotion to books is wearying to the flesh” (Eccl 12:12 LSB). Selectively analyze titles and headings; if appealing, delve deeper into the text to grasp key messages without reading each paragraph.

Practical Exercise: Practice finding key words, marking them in bold for quick reference. This not only speeds up reading but aids in speech preparation, video recording, and content memorization.

Step #4: Only Read if Necessary

After analyzing the text, if it contains familiar information, skip reading every word. Devote time to reading only if the content is new or offers a unique perspective.

Practical Exercise: Analyze multiple books on the same topic within 30-45 minutes at a library or bookstore. Recognize repetitive content and focus on books that stand out. This practice extends to evaluating articles and books by prominent authors.

Application to Writing Articles and Books

When creating articles, ensure they align with your beliefs. Read quickly to confirm if the content reflects your philosophy.

Example: I don’t rely solely on ChatGPT for content. I leverage my knowledge and use ChatGPT for research, diving deeper into unfamiliar topics.

I hope this information assists you in accelerating your reading and enhancing productivity. See you in the next video!
